Work history

September 1998 - February 1999
Dove Health
Knutsford
Cheshire

Quality Control officer

Dove International offered a small electronic device that acted as an electronic acupuncture machine. Without actually having to insert needles! A machine known as HealthPoint. Dove Health was a small company of 6, with parts ordered in and final assembly going on from the premises.

The company at the time was seeking to qualify for the ISO9001 mark for quality control. The company took on a consultant to advise on the process as the company moved to qualify. My role was to work along side the consultant to bring the company up to code. Making sure processes are put into place, that lines of accountability are instituted and maintained.

June 1999 - August 1999
Fatty Arbuckles

Wait staff

After taking some time out to work out what I wanted to do, and finally getting back into education again (University of Huddersfield) I needed employment until I started back in Huddersfield. So, I joined the newly refurbished Fatty Arbuckles in Salford Quays as a waiter.

This was a very good experience, working with customers, ensuring communication with the kitchen is quick, concise and clear, handling money, and prioritizing tasks in hand.

July 2000 - August 2000, July 2001 - August 2001
Europcar Rental
Manchester Airport
Manchester

Driver

As summer employment from university, worked at Manchester Airport as a driver. Moving vehicles from the terminals back to the company's yard for cleaning and preparation before returning other vehicles to the terminals as needed. Sometimes having to visit other yards round the country to move vehicles as required by customers. For example, a customer arriving from the US requested a 7 seat MPV diesel automatic. The company has very few, so I was tasked with fetching the only available one from London.

Very useful job because when everything got busy, we had to be quick, plan ahead, and schedule everything carefully in terms of the priority of vehicles to be moved, movement of drivers, etc.

July 2002 - August 2002
Ringway Handling Services Ltd
Manchester Airport
Manchester

Baggage handler

Working in a team on the loading and unloading of luggage and freight on to and off from aircraft at Manchester Airport. A surprisingly complicated, and labour intensive process.

June 2004 - March 2006

Handforth Dean
Handforth
Cheshire

Stock Controller

Working as part of a team to maintain the stock system. Checking anomalies, correcting errors, and ensuring sensible stock levels where maintained.

Specific functions also included assisting with the planning for special events. Such as Halloween, Christmas, etc. This involved estimating demand, shelf and floor space, delivery schedules, and stock levels to be maintained.

*Also received training and became an in-store First Aid responder.

Geos/Geos x Nova

Teacher

My current and main employment. Working as an English teacher in a private school in Kashiwazaki, Japan. I teach many ages, ranging from 3 to 70! Usually in small classes of no more than 7. My role includes planning lessons, scheduling and planning special events such as kids parties.

I am also involved with checking a students level and assigning appropriate lesson plans, as well as maintaining a regular review of students ability.

Also, in 2010, Geos Corporation went bankrupt (very famous story) and was taken over by G Communication and merged with their Nova chain of English schools, so now I am also required to visit other schools to assist as needed by the company.

I am also involved with basic level marketing for the school. Designing posters and flyers, and working out campaigns the school can undertake in the local area.

Also now teach a community class once a week for the city. So again, lesson planning is important.

I do also on occasion work with the International office on international events. I have done 2 presentations about the UK, run a cooking class (Yorkshire pudding!) as well as helping to run Kashiwazaki's "Kids Winter School" a day of events based on English.

Assistant Language Teacher (ALT. Part time)

In order to gain further teaching experience in a different environment, when the opportunity arose to take on the part time role with the city, I decided to do so. As an ALT, my role is to assist with the planning, teaching, and running of English classes. Mainly because a lot of the teachers don't really have much more English than their students!

The ALT's for the city do not work in a school, they are assigned schools according to the city office. And will visit a different one each day. Currently I work at Hisumi and Kashiwazaki Shougako (Elementary school). And the role an ALT has can be quite different. In Hisumi, I work as back up to the teachers. In Kashiwazaki, the teacher quite often cedes the class to me, and I take the lead.

Very valuable experience as I have had to become very adept at thinking on my feet, using multitudes of teaching techniques, as well as handling large groups. Typically an average class in Japan will be around 40 students.
